Some people in our class seemed disturbed by the idea of operating a library like a business. I see libraries as more of a hybrid, providing a mix of services related to education, social services, and business.
Academic libraries are now being asked to provide education for students and faculty—teaching them technology, research and study skills, and how to effectively seek information across a variety of sources. A reference librarian at an academic library often performs a social services role, acting as a counselor to a student who is frustrated or desperate for help. Public libraries, especially those in urban areas also provide social services, directing patrons to appropriate resources for their needs.
As a social service, some of the public may demand outcome measurements. Iowa’s school assessments are made public so the community knows how successful their school is compared to others. Often when a library is trying a get a bond approved, they promote the services provided in order to gain community support. Libraries also run promotions when they offer services “specials” to attract patrons to the library.
